[VIDEO] First Woman Of Color Wins Turner Prize

Since 1984 the Turner Prize has been known as one of the most prestigious visual arts awards in the UK. This year Lubaina Himid won the prize. At the age of 63, CNN says that she is not only the first woman of color to nab the Turner Prize, but also the oldest winner within a decade. CNN explains that her work, which celebrates black creativity, made her stand out from the pack. She also reportedly broke from tradition by showcasing a piece that “is over 30 years old.” CNN adds, that by acknowledging Himid’s work, “the jury seems to be retroactively recognizing” the impact of the British black art movement of the 1980s.
