‘I would rather be the one that died protecting my friends than be the one that lived’: Mom reveals how her FIFTH-GRADE son has volunteered to block the door when there’s an active shooter
A selfless fifth-grader from Houston shocked his mom when he informed her that he volunteered to risk his life and block the door of his classroom in the event of an active shooter.
As a teacher, Tanai Benard thought it would be appropriate to make sure her son Dez, 10, was taking his school’s safety drills seriously, given recent school shootings like the tragic Parkland massacre that killed 17 on Valentine’s Day.
In a now-viral Facebook post, Tanai recounts how Dez told her his school held an active shooter drill, and shared what he had learned he should do in the emergency.
Tanai was immediately alarmed by her son’s words, thinking the decision to have him protect his class may have something to do with the color of his skin.
