A Teen Girl Is Murdered Over A Boy At School
The 17-year-old Tanaya Lewis, accused of killing a classmate was laughing as she chased Danyna Gibson and stabbed her in the chest and back, authorities said Friday as they filed a first-degree murder charge.
Tanaya Lewis was arraigned in Warren District Court, two days after Gibson was stabbed with a steak knife in a classroom at Fitzgerald High School. Police said there was animosity between the straight-A students over a boy.
The case is ‘very unfortunate, all the way around,’ defense attorney Mark Brown said after the hearing.
A fight over a boy led to the stabbing and murder of a 16-year-old student at Warren Fitzgerald High School right outside of Detroit. Police say 16-year-old Danyna Gibson was reportedly stabbed two times in the chest with a steak knife on Wednesday morning.
According to Warren Police Commissioner, William Dwyer, there was about 20-30 students and a teacher present in the classroom that morning around 8:30 am.
Shortly after Superintendent Laurie Fournier released this statement to the public:
“At approximately 8:30 a.m. this morning, we received a report that a Fitzgerald High School student had stabbed another high school student resulting in injuries. The alleged attacker has been arrested and is in custody. The injured student has been transported to the hospital. The high school is on lockdown until further notice. We will share updates when they are available. Please note the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority.”
A student witness, Francesca Pascua, was sitting right in front of Gibson when the suspect charged her with a knife. She told WXYZ news what happened that day at school,
“She was running towards me, she was screaming, and all I saw was the girl catch her and stab her in her chest.”
Pascua says the victim tried to get away but got caught by a group of students when the suspect caught up to her, “All I just saw was her running trying to save herself, and that’s when she stopped, and the girl grabbed her and stabbed her.”
Francesca says Gibson collapsed and her teacher tried to get her killer out of the room,
“She ran out the classroom while the teacher was pushing her out and she was saying I’m going to kill you, I am going to slit your throat. She was saying crazy things and like running around in circles.”
The school resource officer gave CPR to Gibson with the help of a teacher.
“The school resource officer did a superb job. He was there within second trying to save this young girls life.” Dwyer said.
He then goes on to say he believes there should be additional security across the country in schools where more funding should be allocated.
The 17-year-old suspect is now in custody for the death of Gibson who reported once friends with the victim. Both teens excelled in school making straight A’s.
Police commissioner says, “The victim and the suspect knew each other, and the male student knew both the suspect and the victim, and that might have been one of the reasons this occurred.”
He then went on to say “It is possible that the victim and the suspect had a relationship with the male student,” but couldn’t tell for sure due to the ongoing investigation.
Dwyer says they are asking for a murder warrant charging the suspect with homicide, but the Macomb County Prosecutor’s office will determine the charges.
He emphasizes that the school district is shocked, and hasn’t seen this type of crime, “This is the first type of situation we’ve had in this school district in the past 50 years. Officers can’t recall a case where a student was murder at a high school in Warren.”
Danyna’s family told the outlet she was apart of the cross country team, robotics club, color guard, marching band, the National Honor Guard Society, student council, and the generation of promise club.
After an early dismissal at 10:30 a.m. superintendent Fournier released a statement saying, “Our Fitzgerald Community is FitzNation strong, and it’s important that we come together and support each other. Out thought’s and prayers continue to be with Danyna’s family, friends, and classmates during this difficult time.”
The school is scheduled to be closed on Thursday but will have a vigil on the high school football field at 1:00 p.m. that day.
