Forest Whitaker will soon be a single man.
After 22 years of marriage, Whitaker has filed for a divorce from his wife, Keisha Nash Whitaker.
According to PEOPLE, the fifty-seven-year-old petitioned for divorce on Thursday morning. In court documents, Whitaker expressed the couple’s differences.
Whitaker and his wife married in 1996.
Whitaker took to Twitter to share a special message about family for the holidays. “Christmas is a celebration of solidarity – a time of the year when we are reminded that the bonds our families, friends, fellow citizens and beyond are based on sharing and bringing joy. #MerryChristmas to you all!”
The couple share two children together, Sonnet Noel, 22 and True, 20.
Whitaker and his wife both have children from previous relationships. Whitaker has a 28-year-old son Ocean. Keisha has a 27-year-old daughter, Autumn.
PEOPLE reported that Keisha told the magazine in 1997 that Whitaker swept her off her feet.
“He is very honest and sensitive and romantic. He swept me off my feet — not with material things, more like the way he displayed his emotions,” she said.
The couple reportedly met during the filming of the 1993 movie, Blown Away. She played the role of Whitaker’s girlfriend. He proposed one year later after the film was made.
Her wedding was described as a beautiful one.
“It was basically more spiritual than traditional and sealed by a beautiful Apache marriage blessing,” Keisha said at the time.
The couple had their ceremony in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Whitaker nor any of his representatives have released a statement concerning the divorce.
According to The Blast, Whitaker is not looking to pay any spousal support, and he wants both parties to be responsible for their legal fees.
The US Weekly reported that Whitaker didn’t consider himself a ‘tough love guy’ when it came to raising his children. He said that Keisha was known for showing the tough love.
“They come to me when they’re trying to slip something by,” he told Parade at the time. He also noted that Keisha was “must stronger” with their children. “I have to always take a pause when they come and say, ‘Hey dad, is it OK if we do this? So I just look at them, like, ‘Have you talked to your mom about that?’ They know I’m the easy one,” he explained.
This is not the first split we have seen within the last couple of months.
Michelle Williams and Chad Johnson split while ‘Chad Loves Michelle’ television series was still airing new episodes. The singer took to Instagram to announce the news to her fans.
“I still remain fearless. I guess I still remain single! Things didn’t work out. The healing that needs to take place is a must! I don’t wanna destroy another relationship. Blessings to him, his family and ministry. #FEARLESS.”
She also released a song entitled, ‘Fearless’ where she shares some of her biggest fears.
The show focused on Michelle and Chad’s relationship and documented their journey down the aisle.
Chad said that the show allowed him and Michelle to share their truths.
“I think unfortunately people have been really good at creating their own reality and the statements made about me in that sense could not be further from the truth to the way I have lived all of my adult life,” he said. “People talk about having receipts, and I think I’ve got plenty of them in the opposite direction.”
The show also featured a snippet of Michelle battling the depression issues that she was seeking help for.
“I am so glad to have the opportunity to share my journey. I think that people like me are making it easier for someone to go get an assessment and therefore get a diagnosis and have a name to put to what they’re feeling,” she said. “A lot of people have been walking around with depression or anxiety without knowing what it was.”
