Police are investigating a video of an officer restraining a man who was not resisting. The officer then struck the man in the head with what appears to be a taser. Louisville, Kentucky Metro Police say the man was pinned to the ground by four officers when the video was taken by a bystander. Matthew Murphy has bruises on top of his head and all over his face from the trauma.
In the video obtained by WDRB News, Murphy didn’t appear to be struggling or resisting. Officers were yelling at protesters in the crowd to keep their distance from the area. The officer closest to Murphy’s head took a bright yellow object and hit him in the head. The 30-year-old was arrested on several counts of assaulting a police and other charges according to court records. Murphy is being held at the Metro Corrections facility on a $25,000 cash bond.
People in the crowd feel like the police used excessive force while Murphy was handcuffed and they can be heard in the video screaming “that’s not right.” According to arrest citations, an off-duty police officer was flagged down due to a fight and Murphy allegedly attacked the officers. Murphy was allegedly “striking, kicking, squeezing, and causing great alarm,” according to the documents. The arrest report also says the officer was ‘forced’ to fight Murphy ‘in the middle of the street’ because of his actions.
Murphy also allegedly grabbed an officer in the private area and ‘twisted causing pain’. He’s also being accused of spitting at an officer after he was taken to the hospital. The officer said Murphy had “became disorderly” and stood up in his hospital bed according to the police report.
A spokesman for the Louisville Metro Police Department, Dwight Mitchell, said police are aware that there is a video and that it is under investigation. Mitchell didn’t give any information pertaining to the events that happened.
