Amazon Studios To Launch Slavery Reparations Series, “Black America”

On the heels of the immense backlash towards HBO’s alternative history series Confederate, where slavery remains legal, Will Packer and Aaron McGruder have teamed up to create their own version of the post-Civil War era in the upcoming Amazon series, Black America.

According to Deadline, Packer and McGruder’s alt-history series will follow a world of newly freed slaves that have secured the Southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama as reparations for slavery and can now “shape their own destiny.” The new nation, called New Colonia, is said to have a “tumultuous” and “violent” relationship with the U.S. government.

The project, which Packer says is in “very active development” with McGruder “off and writing,” started at Amazon Studios. According to the Girls Trip producer, when he first was pitched the idea by Amazon, he thought it both “crazy and brilliant.”

“I was immediately enthralled by the idea; I couldn’t stop thinking about it and what a provocative and bold piece of content it could be,” Packer said. He added that he and Aaron discussed “what a huge opportunity and responsibility it would be do this project and do it right.”
