A Racial Slur About A Great Civil Rights Leader Got A New York Meteorologist Fired
By: Brianna Wigfall
A Rochester, New York meteorologist used a racial slur during the Friday evening broadcast and was fired two days later. Jeremy Kappell referred to a downtown Rochester park as “Martin Luther Coon–*King*, Jr. Park” as it’s named after the late civil rights leader. Kappell claims the reference was only a misunderstanding but after WHEC Channel 10 conducted an internal investigation they decided to terminate.
“As a result of that broadcast, meteorologist Jeremy Kappell is no longer with News10NBC,” the stations Vice President and General Manager, Richard Reingold, said in a statement. “These words have no place on News10NBC’s air, and the fact that we broadcast them disheartens and disgust me; that it was not caught immediately is inexcusable. I regret that we did not immediately interrupt our broadcast and apologize on the spot,” he said.
